. It was founded in 1921 by the Sisters of Mercy. IC is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a unit school. The high school is the only parochial high school in the Diocese of Memphis.

As a smaller school, IC is able to provide individualized attention to its students. Some of the ways the school does this is through Spanish immersion programs in pre-K and Kindergarten, enrichment programs in the elementary school, middle and high school choir, daily foreign language courses in middle school, and Accelerated Reader. . For science courses, students are able to attend classes at CBU and utilize the new Cooper-Wilson Center for Life Sciences.

The school has made many upgrades to its campus in recent years. These include adding air-conditioning to the gym, a remodeled elementary school library, renovations to McAuley Hall in the high school, and new doors and entryways to campus buildings. The school has also hired a full-time development director to support the long-term financial viability of the school. Future plans, as announced in the parish bulletin in January 2011, include a Cathedral Center. This new building will include a new library, pre-K and kindergarten classrooms, and meeting spaces for parish ministries. Fundraising for this building will hopefully begin sometime in 2012.
