from 1953. In 1955 he married Marigold Evans-Bevan of Wales, daughter of Sir David Evans-Bevan. They had two sons: James (b. 1958) and Alexander (b. 1962). Upon the death of his father in 1975, Ian succeeded to the earldom.

Ian, Earl of Rothes died on 15 April 2005, leaving the Earldom of Rothes to his eldest son, James.
