are orange and green. Approximately 97% of the students who attend the school are African American, 2% are Caucasian, and the small remainder are Hispanic or Asian. The school's athletic teams are known as the Vikings. In its first few years of operation, there were no African American students, one Asian, and the remainder were Caucasian.

The first graduating class of Huffman High School [1970] had to attend classes at another Birmingham high school [Woodlawn] until the Huffman buildings were completed during the 1966-67 school year. The name of the original school yearbook was the Valhalla.
