Biography

Hu Fei is the son of Hu Yidao, a heroic and gregarious pugilist from Liaodong. He is also a descendant of one of the four bodyguards of Li Zicheng. His father and another pugilist, Miao Renfeng (a descendant of another of the bodyguards), had a duel on a snowy mountain to determine who was the better fighter. Miao killed Hu Yidao unintentionally when he inflicted Hu with a minor cut wound with his sword. Unknown to both Hu and Miao, Miao's sword had actually been secretly smeared with poison by Tian Guinong, a treacherous villain who intended to make Miao and Hu kill each other.

Hu Fei, then an infant, was rescued by Ping A'si, a young man whose life his father had saved before. Ping raised Hu all by himself and became Hu's foster father. Hu grows up to be a chivalrous hero just like his father. He never hesitates to help the poor or weak and slays villains and corrupt officials. His adventures lead him to meet Yuan Ziyi and Cheng Lingsu, with whom he becomes entangled in a complex love triangle. Cheng loses her life trying to save his and Yuan can never be together with him as she has already become a nun.

Hu falls in love with Miao Ruolan, the daughter of his sworn enemy, Miao Renfeng. He is forced into a duel with Miao Renfeng over a misunderstanding and the novel ends on a cliffhanger in which Hu has a chance to kill Miao but he hesitates because he is in a dilemma.
