 on January 1, 1910. The municipality, which was known as Hjelmen at that time, had a population of 986. On 5 November 1912 the name was changed from Hjelmen to Hjelme by royal resolution. On 1 January 1964, Hjelme, then with 956 inhabitants, was merged with the majority of Herdla
