His father Hugo Thimig was a stage actor and his sister Helene was a stage actress. Thimig began his professional career in 1910 at the Hoftheater (Court Theater) in Meiningen till the First World War. He starred as "Viktor Hempel" in Viktor Und Viktoria in 1933 alongside Renate Muller
