Mkhalele played for South Africa national football team, earning 66 caps and scoring 8 goals in the process. He participated in the 1998 FIFA World Cup. He was the part of the Orlando Pirates squad that won the 1995 African Championship. He was also part of the 1996 Bafana squad that lifted the Arican Cup of Nations.
