). The center of this region was Kremnitz (Kremnica

), a gold mining city with medieval history and importance for Hungarian kingdom. In the 19th century, coal sources were discovered in Krickerhau (Handlová) region. A number of villages, mostly spread out in the mountainous and hilly areas, were agricultural and developed a special kind of German subculture.
