Haplogroup Q1a3 (Y-DNA)
Encyclopedia
Haplogroup Q1a3 is a subclade of Y-DNA Haplogroup Q
Haplogroup Q (Y-DNA)
In human genetics, Haplogroup Q is a Y-chromosome DNA haplogroup.-Origins:Haplogroup Q is one of the two branches of haplogroup P . Haplogroup Q is believed to have arisen in Central Asia approximately 15,000 to 20,000 years ago. It has had multiple origins proposed...

. Haplogroup Q1a3 is defined by the presence of the M346 Single Nucleotide Polymorphism
Single nucleotide polymorphism
A single-nucleotide polymorphism is a DNA sequence variation occurring when a single nucleotide — A, T, C or G — in the genome differs between members of a biological species or paired chromosomes in an individual...

(SNP) and may therefore be referred to as Q-M346 in shorthand
Shorthand
Shorthand is an abbreviated symbolic writing method that increases speed or brevity of writing as compared to a normal method of writing a language. The process of writing in shorthand is called stenography, from the Greek stenos and graphē or graphie...

.

Distribution

Q1a3 was first thought to be isolated to India but has since been detected in the Middle East, Europe and the Americas.

Associated SNP's

Q1a3 is marked by the presence of the M346 SNP. Since the discovery of M346 several additional SNP's have been found to also be associated with Q1a3. These SNP's include: L56 and L57. These SNP's appear to be "parallel" to M346.

Subgroups

The International Society of Genetic Genealogy (ISOGG) defines the subgroups of Q1a3 as the following:
  • Haplogroup Q1a3a (L53, L54, L55)
    • Haplogroup Q1a3a1 (M3)
      • Haplogroup Q1a3a1a (M19)
      • Haplogroup Q1a3a1b (M194)
      • Haplogroup Q1a3a1c (M199, P106, P292)
  • Haplogroup Q1a3b (M323)
