In 2010, the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR), a human rights group, has taken the lead in advocating the right of Orthodox Copts to divorce and remarry. It has called on the Egyptian authorities to take immediate steps towards establishing an optional family law system.

In May 2010, The Higher Administrative Court ordered Egypt’s Coptic Orthodox Church to allow divorced Christians to remarry, confirming that it is unconstitutional and against the law to prevent second marriage for Egyptian Copts.
If the Church accepted the court ruling, more than 35,000 Copts, who are hoping to remarry, would be able to do so. Moments after the ruling was announced, Shenouda, who is known for his conservative and allegedly rigid understanding of the Bible, mobilised his bishops and lawyers to deaden the euphoria caused by the unprecedented ruling among Coptic divorcees, who are desperately trying to get remarried.
In June, 2010, Coptic fundamentalists says that marriage is one of the seven sacraments of the Church, which no outsider or agency should interfere in as Pope Shenouda should not be ordered to change spiritual teachings. The matter that lead liberal Muslims to wonder how can Copts reject the religious state and in the same time they disagree with the principles of the civilian state. Subsequently, the church's strict conditions for remarriage have been subject to growing criticism by Copts themselves as well as civil rights organisations.

In July, 2010, Egypt's Supreme Constitutional Court suspended the implementation of a controversial judicial ruling by the Higher Administrative Court to allow divorced Copts to remarry, which was rejected by the Coptic Orthodox Church in Egypt.
