Controversy

Several local pressure groups paint this facility as being a cause of concern with land loss, excessive traffic and an insufficient water supply. Other residents support the development as it enables customers to obtain lower prices and allows the convenience of large stores that otherwise would have required long trips to Springfield. They also point to the areas growing population as needing new stores and a plan by the state of Massachusetts to complete the widening of Route 9 from Northampton to the Amherst border as a solution to traffic jams.
