. She was built at Barrow by Naval Construction and Armaments Company and laid down on 29 August 1894, being launched 3 March 1896, and completed for service 18 November 1897.

In 1899 at least one of HMS Doris's QF 4.7 inches (119.4 mm) guns was mounted on an improvised field carriage and used as a field gun in the Second Boer War
