's colonial Navy prior to Federation in 1901. Following federation, the base came under the control of the Royal Australian Navy

A drill hall was added following federation. It served as an important training centre and home dock for a number of small naval vessels until the base was decommissioned in 1994. The oldest remaining buildings date from 1912-13.
