Günter Schwartzkopff was a highly decorated Generalmajor in the Luftwaffe
during World War II
. He was also a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross
. The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. Günter Schwartzkopff was killed on 14 May 1940 after his JU 87
was shot down by anti-aircraft fire. He was posthumously awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on 24 November 1940 and later promoted to Generalmajor.
