He resigned as chairman of Stoke City on Monday 22 May 2006.

Gunnar has for long been associated with Icelandic wheeler dealer Sindri Jónsson. They made huge profits of SPRON holding shares in the summer of 2007. Their partnership ended when Sindri decided to become a monk in December 2011.
