A left footer, Stockdale started his career as a half back flanker and was first pushed up forward in the 1922 preliminary final, a place he remained in for most of his career. The following season he kicked 68 goals and was the league's leading goalkicker. It was also the first of three times that he led Essendon's goalkicking tallies.
