The area was settled by many families in the early-to-mid-19th century. Some of the surnames of people in the area were Judy, Grimmes, and Roberts. Many of the Judy family can still be found throughout the area. The Judy name was an Irish name and dates back to the 14th century. William Judy moved to the Green Pond area in 1867 with one son Jasper Judy. Both married local women of the Cherokee people in the area. The Judy family consists of many new names over the years. And are over 7,000 strong in direct and non direct relation. Many of the names are "Ford, Staples, Prosser, Wheltingham, Roberts, Grimmes, Wild and too many more to list here. Many of the Judy family still raise oranges in the area around Green Pond.
