History

In 1968, a group of parents and other concerned citizens of the Cooper Road Community felt that the time had come to build a high school that could adequately accommodate the high school population of a rapidly growing community.

Before Green Oaks was built, the only high school available was the Linear Junior-Senior High School that was originally designed to house 760 students in 1961, and Booker T. Washington which was across town. By 1967, the population had grown to 1,675. As can be imagined, this situation presented a very crowded and uncomfortable atmosphere in the classrooms as well as in the halls. So, the need for a senior high school was very evident, and thus began the idea for Green Oaks. The building of the new school greatly aided the community and surrounding area.

An 80 acres (323,748.8 m²) site located eight miles (13 km) north of the downtown area of Shreveport in the vicinity of the Cooper Road, (now known as Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive) at the corner of Legardy and Prince Valiant Drive was selected to construct the 2.5 million dollar complex.

In August, 1971, the doors of Green Oaks, an ultramodern completely air-conditioned school, was opened to 1,260 students in grades 9-12.

Over the years, students at Green Oaks have excelled in academic and athletic competitions. Each Spring our students participate in the district academic rally, speech and drama festivals, band, choir and piano festivals, and district and state club conventions. Green Oaks’ students have been National Merit Scholarship semi-finalists, National Coca Cola Scholarship Finalists, and others have received academic, music, or athletic scholarships.
