Good Night, Dear Lord (album)

Overview

The album is a deeply felt collection of religious songs sung with proper reverence by the 22 year old singer. The album is noteworthy for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is unlike any of Mathis' other studio albums in that it is made up solely of religious music. Although he would include some religious music on his subsequent holiday albums, this is the only time in his career that he would release an album exclusively of this genre. Secondly, this is the first album to feature Mathis singing classical music, notably the works of Gounod and Schubert. Further, Mathis sings songs that represent a number of faiths and in a number of languages, showing his range and versatility as a singer. Finally, the album inspired Barbra Streisand
