Biography and career

Giancarlo Guerrero was born in Costa Rica, and had his musical training through El Sistema

 in Venezuela. He has degrees from Baylor University and Northwestern University. In June 2004, Mr. Guerrero was awarded the Helen M. Thompson Award by the American Symphony Orchestra League, which recognizes outstanding achievement among young conductors nationwide.

Guerrero is currently the music director of the Nashville Symphony. Previously, music director of the Táchira Symphony Orchestra in Venezuela, music director of the Eugene Symphony, and associate conductor of the Minnesota Orchestra. In the 2011-2012 season, he will be Principal Guest Conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra’s Miami Residency. Guerrero has worked with many major North American orchestras, including those in Baltimore, Boston, Cincinnati, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, San Diego, Seattle, Toronto, Vancouver, and the National Symphony in Washington, DC. He has performed at a number of major festivals, such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom Music Festival, and Indiana University summer orchestra festival. He also works with the Costa Rican Lyric Opera, and has performed the Gulbenkian Orchestra in Lisbon, and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.
