The victory meant Baghetti became the first Italian since 1954 to win a Formula 1 World Championship event. It also ensured that he became the first, and only driver ever to win on their World Championship Grand Prix debut against a field that did not consist entirely of other debutant drivers.

Death and legacy

Baghetti died of cancer in 1995.

While his ultimate level of talent is still debated, Baghetti's Championship debut win has secured him a footnote in Formula One history. On the one hand, he won his first three F1 races, starting with two non-championship Grand Prix races in Italy, no mean feat for any driver even in superior machinery; on the other, his results both before and after this were unimpressive.
