Career

Tătaru joined the squad of Steaua Bucureşti as a youth in 1959, before being promoted to the first team in 1967, aged 19. He played for Steaua Bucureşti until 1974, being one of the team's best strikers. In 1974 he signed for Chimia Râmnicu Vâlcea

 and then he played for FC Târgovişte (1975–1980)

In 1980 decides to retire from football, but one year later is called by the Divizia B team Autobuzul Bucureşti to play for them. Retires again in 1982 but again receives a call, this time from Unirea Slobozia. He finally called it a day in 1984, aged 36.

In 1970-71 he was top scorer of Divizia A.

He won 10 caps for Romania

A fine player, Tătaru had many fans due his spectacular play and the large amount of goals he scored, but he also had a heavy-drinking habit that made him miss many opportunities.
