Getting it Right for Every Child - GIRFEC
Encyclopedia
GIRFEC - Getting it Right for Every Child (or simply 'Getting it Right') is Scotland's approach to supporting children and young people and is an important part of child protection policy. It was launched in 2008 and is roughly equivalent to Every Child Matters

 in England.

It requires that services aimed at children and young people - social work, health, education, police, housing and voluntary organisations - adapt and streamline their systems and practices and work together, particularly on information sharing. The approach encourages earlier intervention by professionals to avoid crisis situations at a later date.

The Scottish Government has published a number of guides and resources to support implementation.

For practitioners and professionals who are implementing the Getting it Right approach, tools and help, including a learning community, have been produced by the Scottish Government.

A conference to promote GIRFEC took place in Glasgow on 24–26 September 2008. The proceedings were recorded and published by IRISS

In a report published in November 2009 the National Residential Child Care Initiative reaffirmed its view that full adoption of the GIRFEC approach will ensure consistency of assessment across professional and authority boundaries, and should facilitate earlier intervention based on an early identification of how to improve outcomes, taking into account a child's strengths and weaknesses.
