Plot

The episode opens in a political science class where Annie Edison is shocked to learn that another student, Annie Kim (Irene Choi), is just as smart, perky and tenacious as she was in high school. Annie Kim, for answering a question correctly, gets special attention from Professor Cligoris (Martin Starr

) which irks Annie.

Meanwhile, Britta is seen getting serious about college. Shirley praises her for choosing a major - however, Britta sees a flyer on which there's a picture of her old friend who she used to protest with, who is now in prison in Syria

. Britta realizes her friend even has a Facebook page.

Annie Edison brings Annie Kim to the study room to introduce her to the study group, where, while trying to outdo "Other" Annie, Annie Edison reveals that she is planning to have a Model UN at Greendale. Annie Kim leaves, and the group notices how competitive Annie and Annie are, and express their concern that Annie Kim's academic achievement will take Annie Edison back to the "dark side". Jeff asks them not to get worried, because she is better than her Annie Kim in every way. Britta storms off to protest, jealous that her friend is being tear gassed and possibly beaten up, while she is getting a "new life".

Annie Edison looks at the notice board, only to realize that Annie Kim has stolen her idea of starting a model UN at Greendale. She goes to the group in agitation, and Jeff, unable to see Annie descending to the "dark side", goes to Professor Cligoris and Annie Kim, and reveals that the Greendale model UN idea was Annie Edison's. Professor Cligoris says that only one model UN can represent Greendale, to resolve the conflict, they should have a competition to see who has a better model UN. Both Annies agree to the idea.

At the competition, Annie and the study group are doing remarkably well. however, just as they are about to win, someone in the group farts, breaking the attention of the group. Annie asks Jeff to do something, but when Jeff too joins the fun, Annie gets upset, screams and throws a tantrum. Jeff reprimands her by saying that she's acting like a school girl but not in a hot way. On hearing his words, she runs out of the cafeteria.

Jeff finds her in the study room, and says that it was all his fault - he pushed Annie to compete with Asian Annie. Annie says that she was the one who ran to him with the whole thing, and realized she is a child. Jeff tells her she's not, and says that she can't use him as a crutch, and he too, can't use the fact that she is a kid as a crutch to let her know how important she is to him while remaining at a comfortable distance. The two have a brief romantic moment but break it quickly, calling it "creepy."

Annie Edison and Jeff go back to the competition, and Annie apologizes for her behavior, and says that she farted. Jeff says that he cant let her take the bullet, and he was the one who farted. The group members, one by one, say that they are the ones who farted, and no one really knows who actually farted. Annie then asks the group why they are still there, and Abed lets them know of a plan he devised to win the competition, where they will be from Earth 2, a parallel universe, coming in to have world world peace with Annie Kim's earth. Annie Kim refuses to agree to unite with them, but Professor Cligoris says that they represent what UN actually stands for (empty gestures) and declares them as the winners.

In the subplot, Britta continues her rebellious ways by first kicking the trash can (much to the happiness of Senor Chang - who feels he has no power or authority as a security guard), then "making a mess". However, when Chang takes her to his superior, Britta refuses to admit she is going to break a law, to the dismay of both her and Chang. However, she goes to the cafeteria where the study group is celebrating their win, covered with Barbie Dolls, and Chang gets to taser her, making both of them happy.

Reception

The episode received positive reviews from the critics. Steve Heisler, of NYMag, said of the epsiode, "The problem I’ve always had with Community — admittedly a minor one —is that it’s often so obsessed with wit and style that the show reads as disingenuous. Sure, they’re a hell of a lot of fun, but episodes can feel empty without pathos or a real, grounded sense of empathy. But as last week’s show-stopping musical number promised, this is a whole new Community, and the show is ready to make amends for its past mistakes. (I’m choosing to ignore the part where the dean said the show was going to be just like last year, only with less money.) “Geography of Global Conflict” wasn’t necessarily an unstoppable joke machine like Community at its best, nor was it a tear gas-canister full of emotion. But the episode teased what will likely carry on throughout the season: a reevaluation of character relationships and maybe, just maybe, some real heart. And Tasering."

In its original broadcast, "Geography of Global Conflict" reached nearly 4.1 million households, with a 1.8/5 share in the 18-49 demographic.
