Summary Garfield lives with Jon Arbuckle and canine Odie in what appears to be a suburban town inhabited by cartoon characters, and regularly interacts with, in addition to Odie and Jon, Nermal, Arlene, and characters from other strips. Garfield, bored with comic life, escapes to the real world with Odie, only to find that the strip will be canceled if he doesn't get back in 24 hours, and that there is no known way to return. To make matters worse, a musclebound dog and cat (Hale and Hardy) are slanted to take their place in papers, and they will stop at nothing to prevent Garfield and Odie's return.
