Gandanga is a Zimbabwean word from the Shona

 language spoken by the Zezuru people.

The word "Gandanga" is a popular term referring to the Guerrilla soldiers who fought during the Zimbabwean liberation struggle against Rhodesia. These Guerrilla soldiers were feared in the villages of Zimbabwe for extreme torture methods they inflicted on any one they believed to be a sell out or "mutengesi". Small units of rebel like soldiers (Gandangas) created the backbone of troops active in the war against the settlers.

The word Gandanga has come to represent a new form of music emerging out of Zimbabwe, "Gandanga Music" simply translated is "Rebel Music" a term popularised by Bob Marley
