History

GFW was established in 1992 when the town of Gibbon, Fairfax, and Winthrop consolidated due to shrinking enrollment. Before then, they were all separate schools but Gibbon and Fairfax had several sports activities together for several years including football, wrestling, and track/field. Gibbon also shared a F.F.A chapter with Winthrop. Despite this, Winthrop shared activities with neighboring Gaylord. When they consolidated, they put the Elementary school in Gibbon and after a minor dispute, put the high school in Winthrop due to the bigger campus and put the middle school in Fairfax.
