In May 2009, after winning the Rio state championship, Fabio Luciano decided to retire. With him as captain, the team conquered two state championships, but disappointed their fans on many occasions (especially in the 2008 Libertadores cup and in that year's Brazilian league). It was only after he left that the team won the Brazilian league for the first time in 17 years, which made older supporters associate him with a particularly disappointing era of the otherwise victorious history of the club.
