In 1992, Tkautz was a 17 year-old was playing the role of Nikki Spencer on E-Street in Channel 10's drama soap, E-Street, and like many TV stars before her, ventured into the music world. Melissa's debut single, "Read My Lips", caused a storm with provocative lyrics such as "if you want to wait till later then hands off my detonator".

"Read My Lips" took 6 weeks to climb to number one - making it one of the fastest climbing Australian chart toppers of 1991. The single spent 2 weeks at number one, 11 weeks in the top 10 and 20 weeks in the top 50. Tkautz's debut single ended up as the 6th highest selling song in Australia for 1991 and in South Australia, where the local charts were heavily biased towards dance and pop music, only Bryan Adams

  • "Read My Lips" was the first single to be released from the album "Fresh". Released in 1991, "Read My Lips" shot to number #1 for 2 weeks on the ARIA singles chart and #1 on the Aria Australasian chart, this single attained platinum sales in a matter of weeks. "Read My Lips" video won the Aria Award "Most Popular Music Video".

  • "Sexy (Is The Word)" was the second single to be released from melissa's first album, "Fresh". Released in 1991, the single went to #3 on the ARIA singles chart. "Sexy (Is The Word)" reached gold sales.

  • "Skin To Skin" was the third single to be released from the album "Fresh" and peaked at number #16 when released on 1992 on the ARIA singles chart.

  • "My House" was the fourth and final single to be released from the album "Fresh". Due to limited Airplay, My House failed to chart.
