. He started Cary Academy and originated Farmers' College. He was also involved in the founding of the Ohio Female College (College Hill, Ohio).

Cary established and edited an agriculural periodical, the Cincinnatus which had wide circulation. He was a member of the Cincinnati Horticultural Society, being president several times.
