Founded by Sean Connell and his wife, Sorka Hanrahan-Connell, the Weyr became too small to sustain all of Pern's dragons and was expanded into several large Weyrs including Benden Weyr

The first Fort Weyrleaders encountered in the series are T'ron (called T'ton in Dragonflight) and his Weyrwoman Mardra. After T'ron loses a knife fight to F'lar, he resigns his position to T'kul. After the Oldtimers moved south, N'ton became Weyrleader when his bronze dragon Lioth flew the new Weyrwoman Margatta's queen Ludeth. Another famous pairing, Sh'gall and Moreta, were the Weyrleaders of Fort Weyr at the time of the great plague.
