Prior to the establishment of the commission, commercial logging and harvesting, as well as sharefarming was undertaken by the then Department of Conservation and Land Management. Its creation meant that the conservation and commercial interests of the state in respect of forestry were separated, thus removing a perceived conflict of interest.

As part of their operations, they operate a commercial nursery and seed technologies facility at West Manjimup.

The commission undertakes its operations in accordance with ISO 14001:2004 and the Australian Forestry Standard.

General Manager

With the agencies establishment in November 2000, Dr Paul Biggs was appointed as its General Manager. On 2 February 2010, Dr Biggs announced that he would be stepping down as General Manager pending selection of a replacement.

On 25 February of that same year, career public servant David Hartley was announced as taking on the role of Acting General Manager for the agency.
