in Washington, DC. FPIF describes itself as a "Think Tank Without Walls" that brings together over 600 writers, scholars, academics, artists and activists seeking to make the United States a more responsible global partner.

FPIF provides analysis of U.S. foreign policy and international affairs and recommends policy alternatives. FPIF believes that "U.S. security and world stability are best advanced through a commitment to peace, justice and environmental protection as well as economic, political, and social rights".

FPIF publishes commentaries, briefs, and reports on its website and organizes briefings for the public, media, lawmakers, and legislative staff. The project aims to amplify the voice of progressives and to build links with social movements in the U.S. and around the world. Through these connections, they advance and influence debate and discussion among academics, activists, policymakers, and decisionmakers.

FPIF was started in 1996 and has published scores of articles, reports, policy briefs, and outreach material, as well organized events and participated in numerous campaigns.
