It served as security for the county court houses, carrying out arrest warrants, and transportation of prisoners for the county until the year in December 2000 when Connecticut eliminated the position of sheriff in all Connecticut Counties. The department had law enforcement powers, but did not use them in modern-times. The reason for this was that most towns and cities in the county, had their own police departments. The only exception to this was and still is the Town of Sherman

Unlike counties in most other states in the United States, in Connecticut, county sheriffs did not act as the primary law-enforcement and patrol agencies for areas of the county not served by a municipal police department. That job fell upon the Connecticut State Police
