Brief History

FEFANA has had a new non-profit juridical status since 13 October 2004. The association is the link between the specialty feed ingredients industry, the EU authorities and Member States. Its purpose is to promote, protect as well as defend common interests of the feed additive industry (in several topics like guidelines, register, labelling and definitions, analysis, feed hygiene and food chain safety or non-feed use of additives).

The association has a secretary general and a board of directors at its Brussels headquarters. Subsidiaries (national platforms) are located in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, the Nordic countries, Poland, Spain, Switzerland and the UK + Ireland.

Agriculture

In agriculture today, the nutritional needs of farm animals are well understood and may be satisfied through direct supplementation of nutrients in concentrated form and controlled.

The nutritional quality of feed is influenced not only by the nutrient content, but also by many other aspects such as:
  • the presentation of feed;
  • hygiene of the products;
  • the content of antinutritional factors;
  • digestibility;
  • palatability and effects on intestinal health, from the health point of view.

Feed additives provide a mechanism through which these nutrient deficiencies can be resolved to the benefit not only food and therefore the rate of growth of such animals, but also their health and well-being.
