Exton Square Mall was built by the Rouse Company and opened its doors in 1973 as a split-level mall with one anchor store

. This anchor, Strawbridge & Clothier, later known as just "Strawbridge's", was centrally located in a two-story location. The main body of the mall ringed the anchor store with an octagonal split-level common area.
