Whitman was possessing his ancestor Eobar Garrington at the time, and when he used the Eye to drive the Fomor from Avalon, Garrington died and Whitman returned to his own time.

 into gathering the pieces. Loki realized that Dormammu would also conquer Asgard if he could, so he gulled Thor and the Avengers into battling the Defenders for the pieces. Although the battles were mostly even, the Defenders managed to acquire every piece -- only to see them stolen by a servant of Dormammu, Asti the All-Seeing. The two teams eventually joined forces to battle Dormammu and his weapon -- with the Scarlet Witch being the only one left standing of the heroes. A desperate hex made the Eye suck Dormammu into itself for energy -- and blast all its power out onto Loki -- ending the threat and leaving the trickster god addled and docile. The Defenders then took the Eye to try and restore the Black Knight
