Geography

Eschert has an area, , of 6.58 km² (2.5 sq mi). Of this area, 2.64 km² (1 sq mi) or 40.1% is used for agricultural purposes, while 3.66 km² (1.4 sq mi) or 55.6% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.27 km² (0.104247582819984 sq mi) or 4.1% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.02 km² (4.9 acre) or 0.3% is either rivers or lakes and 0.01 km² (2.5 acre) or 0.2% is unproductive land.

Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 2.6% and transportation infrastructure made up 0.5%. 49.2% of the total land area is heavily forested and 6.4% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 8.8% is used for growing crops and 11.9% is pastures and 19.1% is used for alpine pastures. All the water in the municipality is in rivers and streams.

Eschert is a star shaped village on the southern side of the Grand Val (valley of Moutier). A portion of the village is along the Raus (Sous la Rive) on the border of Moutier.

Demographics

Eschert has a population (as of ) of . , 13.5% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 10.3%. Most of the population speaks French (83.7%), with German being second most common ( 8.1%) and Italian being third ( 2.8%).
