ENA commenced operations in January 2004 and today twenty-four electricity and gas network companies, including a state-owned rail service, are members of ENA, providing governments, policy-makers and the community with a single point of reference for major energy network issues in Australia.
Issues affecting energy networks include national and state government policy, legislative and regulatory frameworks under which energy networks must operate.

The Energy Networks Association (ENA) is the peak national body for Australia’s energy networks which provide the vital link between gas and electricity producers and consumers. ENA represents gas distribution and electricity network businesses on economic, technical and safety regulation and national energy policy issues.Structure

Function
Energy network businesses deliver electricity and gas to over 13.5 million customers, employ more than 40 000 people and contribute approximately 1.25 percent to Australia's gross domestic product. Energy is delivered across Australia through approximately 48 000 kilometres of transmission lines, 800 000 kilometres of electricity distribution lines, including railways, and 81 000 kilometres of gas distribution pipelines. Function
ENA's role is to provide a strategic focus for the energy networks sector by communicating key messages. All its work is underpinned by technical expertise—more than half the association's staff are specialist engineers. ENA's online catalogue contains hundreds of reference documents relating to cables, contactor gear, electrical and mechanical composites, overhead transmissions and distribution lines, switchgear, engineering recommendations and other information. The association also records faults, defects and safety information on behalf of the networks industry.See also
