Background

Feasibility studies for the dam occurred in 1971 and in June 1977, construction on the dam began. In August 1981, the dam began to impound the reservoir and the first generator became operation in 1982, the last in 1983. The dam was inaugurated in 1983 by Brazilian president Joao Batista Figueiredo.

Specifications

The dam is 1507 m (4,944.2 ft) long and 158 m (518.4 ft) tall and withholds a reservoir with a capacity of 17.6 km³ (4.2 cu mi) and surface area of 703 square kilometre. The dam's power plant contains four 298 MW generators
