. It was founded in 1997 by a group of Hoboken residents including parents and educators (the Mile Square Families). After a charter was granted in January 1997, the school opened in September 1997. It is based on the Bank Street College of Education

, first in 2001 and again in December, 2005. Elysian Charter School was originally housed in the Wallace Elementary School building, and remained there for several years after its creation.

There is a proposal to move the school to purpose-built accommodation within a large residential building on Park Avenue.

Principals

Lydia Becker was Director from 1997 to June 2005. Lydia Becker died on September 10, 2007, from natural causes. While a search was conducted for a permanent school leader, Melissa Landera and Joanna Weintraub were appointed as Interim Directors. In July, 2006, Carol Stock became the new school Director. . Harry Laub, Ph.D. was named the third director in the school's history in June 2011.
