The stadium has a small grandstand with a capacity for around 15,000 spectators.

It was built by the Elsternwick Cricket Club in 1901, and was formerly a Victorian Football League

During the VAFA season, crowds are modest, however the stadium hosts many finals and the Grand Finals for each of the VAFA divisions regularly attract strong crowds of over 10,000.

The stadium also played host to many of the matches from the 2002 Australian Football International Cup

In June 2009, Melbourne's best loved charity day The Community Cup was played at Elsternwick Park. A crowd of 8000 (one of the largest in many years), saw the Espy Rockdogs defeat The Megahertz by 1 point. the days new charity partner is Reclink Australia.
In June 2010 over 10 000 punters came along to see the Clash Community Cup.

Even with over 10 000 people, the ground could hold up to 20 000.
