Gutch was born on 15 July, St Swithin's Day, in Manthorpe, Lincolnshire as Eliza Hutchinson. Her father, Simon Hutchinson, was a land agent in Little Gonerby. In 1868 she was married to solicitor John James Gutch. Her contributions to Notes and Queries were made using the pseudonym

Eliza Gutch was the last private owner of Holgate Windmill
