. He was Lord Chancellor of the United Kingdom from 1885 to 1886, 1886 to 1892 and 1895 to 1905. Giffard had already been created Baron Halsbury, of Halsbury in the County of Devon, in 1885, and was made Viscount Tiverton, of Tiverton in the County of Devon, at the same time he was given the earldom. Those titles were also in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. Halsbury's grandson, the third Earl (who succeeded his father), was a scientist and the first Chancellor of Brunel University
