The first time it was created on 9 December 1680 for Charles Henry Kirkhoven, who had been created Baron Wotton on 31 August 1650.

The second creation was on 2 November 1689 for the later Governor of New York

, Richard Coote, who was also Member of Parliament

 for Droitswich. After his death in 1701, both his sons succeeded him in turn.

The third creation was on 4 September 1767 for the cousin of the 3rd Earl of the second creation, who had succeeded him in the Barony of Coote.
