One good thing to note about his statistics is he only struck out twice in those sixteen at-bats, and he walked four times. In the field, he made no errors, for a perfect fielding percentage. Smith played the 1954 season with Phoenix of the Class C of the Arizona-Texas league where he batted .384 with 32 home runs and 195 RBIs.
