It was first established in 1838. The present structure was built in 1858. Over the protests of area residents, the keeper's house was torn down in 1964. The square pyramidal bell tower survives. The crew that removed the bell lost control of it, and it fell into the Bay. A lobsterman salvaged it and it is on exhibit on Great Spruce Head Island. Along with several other lights in Maine, the growth of trees around the light has made its future problematic.
