In 1929 he returned to study at the University of Minnesota
. He graduated magna cum laude in 1932, taking his M.A. in 1936.
From 1947 Mayo taught at Phillips Academy
, Drake University
. He was professor of English at Iowa Wesleyan College
, and in 1961 received an honorary degree. When Mayo died in 1979, he was survived by his wife, Myra Margaret Buchanan Morton, and children: Mary Elizabeth, Alice Myra Breemer, John Harvey, and grandchildren.
