 in 1996 from Dairyland Power Cooperative, there have been a few attempts to repower the facility, but the site is located next to the Cassville Municipal Airport presenting problems with additional stacks. In 1997, a 300–500 MW natural gas facility was proposed for the site. In 2001, plans called for the closure of the airport to allow the addition of a 200 MW coal facility. As of 2008, the airport remains open and the power plant remains 53 MW. However, there are plans to repower the facility, which is mothballed, with a 300 MW coal plant.

, agreed to buy the Stoneman plant from Integrys Energy Group, with plans to convert it to burn wood waste in 2009. On June 5, 2008, Dairyland Power Cooperative entered into an agreement with DTE Energy to fully purchase the expected 40 MW electrical output.
