. He was founder of the company ET Heron and Co Ltd, a highly-regarded web-offset printers, now based in Heybridge, Essex.

Life and career

Born on April 18, 1867 at 13 Chichester Street, Paddington, eldest son of Thomas Heron who had three businesses in the district, selling poultry, game, cheese and butter and his wife, Jane Eliza Ann Greene. Both his parents died in 1879; orphaned at 10 years old, he was brought up by three strict Baptist maiden aunts and attended Dr Moore's Prep school in the Marylebone Road, followed by Haberdashers Aske's in Hoxton.

1880 left school at 14, apprenticed to Faulding & Truslove Printers in Fulham

1884 became manager of Chevens & Son, Marylebone
member of the Royal Choral Society and Sir George Henschel's choir
Arthur Godfrey wrote songs specifically for him. Also a flautist.

1888 started his own imprint at Westminster Press, 333 Harrow Road, publishing The Advertiser for Paddington and Queens Park

1893 opened business in Tottenham St., gradually absorbing the businesses of Coxill's, Kennett's, Page's, Pitcher's & Hunger's

1897 married Eliza May Margaret, daughter of Thomas Baldrey, draper, at St John the Baptist Church, Kentish Town (they had two sons: Edward Maxwell, b. 1898; Clifford Austin, b. 1903)

1900 published The Optical Lantern Journal

1902 published Scott's Machinery Index

1903 published The Talking Machine News

1906 travelled to the USA to meet printers and Phonograph/Dictograph colleagues
published The Music Dealer, the Millinery Trade Journal, the Violin Student

1907 published The Kinematograph Weekly

1908 elected Mayor of St Pancras for one year, presented to King Edward VII
spoke at St James Theatre on 'League of Mercy' and 'Individuality'
appointed Governor of Royal Free Hospital
published Bowling and Curling
